About Monroe

Monroe County is one of the oldest counties in the state of Michigan and is known for General Custer, who lived in the city of Monroe. Monroe is situated about 17 miles north of Toledo, 35 miles south of Detroit, and 30 miles from Ann Arbor. The Detroit Metro Airport is less than 25 miles from the city limits.

It is here one can also find the River Raisin Battlefield, the only national battlefield park from the War of 1812. Monroe is home to the 260-acre Eagle Island Marsh unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. The shores of Lake Erie offer boating, swimming, camping, wetlands exploration, hiking, and fishing at the 1,300-acre Sterling State Park. Monroe County also has a Public Beach in Luna Pier that has been mentioned in Midwest Magazine and other major publications as the best beach to stop at if you are on Interstate 75 going north between Ohio and Michigan. Golf and fishing are two of the biggest pastimes in Monroe, as it is the Walleye Capital of the Great Lakes.

The Monroe real estate market is rich in history, with many Victorian homes, some of which date back to the 1800s, and new construction only beginning at the turn of the century. Monroe is fairly rural, with abundant farm communities, making farming a huge industry in the region.
